On Thursday the hip-hop community in Chicago and beyond lost a legend in Producer & Artist Smylez who passed away due to health complications. Tons of the music made in today's popular culture and locally is influenced by a sound he made popular along with a slew of other producers. Smylez was more than a producer and artist, he was genuine person. I had the pleasure of sharing the room with Smylez on a few occasions and every time we interacted he showed love. Smylez will be missed dearly. His family ask that if you can, donate to a memorial fund in his name, info below

MY NAME IS CAROLYN JONES, I AM THE MOTHER OF IZERRICK AIGBOKHN. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT I AM DOING THIS, BUT UNFORTUNATELY ON YESTERDAY OCTOBER 27, 2016, MY SON PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 24. IZERRICK WAS AND WILL ALWAYS BE MY ONLY CHILD, MY BABY, MY LOVE. HE LEAVES BEHIND BOTH HIS PARENTS, AND AN 11 MONTH OLD BABY BOY. MY SON "SMYLEZ" WAS VERY WELL KNOWN IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN WHICH WAS HIS PASSION. HE HAD A VERY BRIGHT FUTURE AND CAREER AHEAD OF HIM. MY SON WAS WELL RESPECTIVE AND KIND HEARTED. HE ALWAYS SMILED AND HAD THE MOST JOYFUL LAUGH. TO ALL FAMILY AND FRIENDS, PLEASE, I COME TO YOU AS HUMBLE AS I KNOW HOW TO ASK FOR HELP. I AM SEEKING HELP FOR HIS FUNERAL AND BURIAL ARRANGEMENTS. AS WELL AS SOMETHING EXTRA FOR HIS BABY BOY WHOM HE WILL MISS HIS FIRST BIRTHDAY NEXT MONTH. IZERRICK LOVED HIS MUSIC BUT HIS SON IS WHO HE ADORED THE MOST. PLEASE HELP IF CAN, WE NEED TO RAISE THE FUNDS IMMEDIATELY TO CONTINUE WITH MAKING THE ARRANGEMENTS. IM LOST FOR WORDS AND CRYING TRYING TO TYPE THIS LETTER BECAUSE IM IN DISBELIEF. Salute 2 The Real: Helen Hawkins

Helen Hawkins is a well respected educator in Chicago. She not only is the founder of Olive Harvey Middle College (A school designed to help Chicago Public high school dropouts earn a Diploma and not a GED) but she also started the Grammar school that I graduated from. Triumphant Charter School used to be located at 4935 S. Seeley in the Back of The Yards neighborhood on Chicago's southside. It modeled the makeup and philosophy of Olive Harvey Middle College, with it's mixed classes of 6th, 7th, and 8th Graders. Instead of being called a "Student" every child was referred to as a "Scholar", and treated as such. The atmosphere of the school was more like a family re-uniting everyday than attending school. And just like every family has a "Mother", Ms. Hawkins was ours. Ms. Hawkins was Sweet, but tough and she always let you know she was In-Charge.
